Who is our Secondary Fundamentals Class for?
In my time as a teacher, I have seen many 11-year-olds who are far more mathematically advanced than their 16-year-old counterparts. Yet schools almost always group students primarily based on age, and sometimes only by age, without accounting for their current academic knowledge. As a result, in classrooms there is a group of children who are constantly being left behind academically (how discouraging!), while others are frustrated by a complete lack of challenge (what a waste of potential!).
At Maths Logos, we split our classes according to where each student is positioned on their learning journey. We ask, “What do they need to already know to succeed in this class?”
Our Secondary Fundamentals Classes are for students with:
- Secure times tables and number bonds
- Confidence with equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, comparing fractions, and performing calculations appropriate to KS2 expectations
- Strong skills in column multiplication and long division
This class is designed for families who are home educating. It is aligned with the UK National Curriculum, making it particularly suitable for families who want to prepare their children to sit the GCSE Higher Maths exam in Year 11.
Our classes involve lots of independent study outside the classroom, allowing students to learn at their own pace, whilst maintaining teacher input.
While splitting purely by age is not always helpful, we recognise that age guidance combined with current attainment level can be useful. Rough age guides for our classes:
- High-attaining students: UK Years 7–8 (ages 11–13)
- Confident students: UK Years 9–10 (ages 13–15)
